Emiliana Torrini, refers to herself as "a happy little freckled
woman". Many people have heard
her unique vocals, singing the sorrowfully creepy "Gollums Song" during
the closing credits of
"Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers." Her comparisons to Bjork are inevitable,
since they
both hail from the same country (Iceland) and are very similiar vocally.
The electronic
orchestrations in Torrini's sounds are somewhat reminiscent of Björk's
dramatic
clammoring. The distinction is that Torrini's music is a bit smoother
and less distant.
Torrini doesn't get as experimental with form or instrumentation. Her
voice has a
haunting, slightly eerie quality; as well as the flexibility to be
warm one moment,
chilly and creepy the next.
Diversity on her CD "Love in The Time of Science" mirrors Torrini's
own diverse
background. Her father is Italian and her mother is Icelandic. The
fluid mix of
influences exhibited in her life and on her album is explained on Torrini's
music Website, where she
says, "My father has always listened to tacky
Italian pop music and my mother, well, she was happy with whatever
went
nicely with our noisy vacuum-cleaner." Emiliana's tracks range from
clever
breakbeat moments to mellow electronica pop, which isn't a bad thing.
Overall, it pleasantly comes together as a whole creating a lovely
collection
of what can be call chill-out downtempo triphop. Emiliana has also
skillfully
covered such classics as Ruby Tuesday, Sound of Silence, Chelsea Morning,
White Rabbit, Lay Down, & Crazy Love just to name a few.
Torrini's throaty Icelandic voice combined with her incredible songcrafting
make
her music a must have for anyone who likes well-crafted electronic
music in the vein
of Portishead, Hooverphonic, Esthero, or Massive Attack. Keep
an eye on this
up-and-coming siren of song. Although she isn't a household name, yet,
with her
captivating vocals and enchanting performances this melodic diva soon
will be.
