Paul Brady, singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist,
is a former member of the band "Planxty"
in the 70's alongside with legendary Christy
Moore and Andy Irvine. Probably one of
Ireland's best contemporary singer/song writers,
he was born and raised in Strabane,
Northern Ireland on the border with the Irish
Republic.
Learning to play the piano by ear, his early heroes
were Jerry Lee Lewis, Winifred Atwell and
Fats Domino. By the age of eleven he began to
play guitar, spending hours learning every tune
The Shadows and The Ventures recorded and every
lick Chuck Berry played. During his teens
Brady took summer jobs playing piano and guitar
in Bundoran, a seaside resort in nearby
County Donegal, but it was in 1965 in Dublin,
at college, that he began to develop as a singer
and performer joining a succession of R'n'B/Soul
bands. Surprising most observers at the time, he
released Hard Station in 1981. Self-penned, the
album lyrically reflected the personal changes he
was undergoing and musically was a highly original
reworking of his earlier influences. Irish folk
music took a back seat for the time being. The
more traditional voices who would have preferred
him to stay as he was, were soon replaced by
the voices of praise for what is now accepted as
a classic of Irish rock.
The albums which followed, True For You ('83),Back
To The Centre('85),Primitive Dance('87),
Trick Or Treat('91), and Spirits Colliding( '95)
collectively established Paul as the pre-eminent
Irish singer-songwriter of his generation. Gradually
other artists worldwide began to record his
songs Touring extensively both as a solo performer
and with his own band he has forged a
reputation as a passionate and exciting performer
and attracts a dedicated following worldwide
Brady's first Compass release, Oh What A World,
was his first album of new songs since '95's
Spirits Colliding, and was critically hailed
in Europe as one of his best ever. It's a democratic
affair featuring numerous songs written and co-written
with such stellar writers as Carole King,
Will Jennings, Ronan Keating, Conner Reeves and
Mark Hudson.
With songs born out of real feelings and sung
with a passion few singers can match, Paul Brady
has always found himself carving out his own
musical territory. In a modern world, where most
music seems predictable, where the majority of
artists stay close to the well tried formula, his
astonishing musical vocabulary, passion for the
moment and still almost innocent belief in the
power of the song shines clear and true. Paul
Brady continues to push the boundaries not only
of his own talent but of Irish contemporary music
in the new millennium. The Paul Brady
Songbook cements Brady’s reputation as one of
the finest songwriters of his or any generation.
Paul Brady continues to gain worldwide exposure.
