Skinny formed in the late 1990's has a loose assosciation
with the UK's Dido & Faithless.
The
members Paul Herman, Matty Bonbrook, Tim
Vogt, & Dave Nally are able to blend together
to create an intense almost spiritual musicical
experience. Their range sometimes makes you
wonder which musical category they would best
fit. Skinny has managed to mix an array of
styles into a unique sound, from ambient to indie
alternative. It's all shuffled in with a bit
of sample induced electronica that twirls the
whole thing around. You're not sure what to
call it, but you just know it's so Damm Good!
Their first release in 1998, "The
Weekend" was a concept album that a whole weekend
should describe. The theme isn't overbearing
- the songs stand on their own, and are sprinkled
liberally throughout the record relating to the
3 days we all live for - Friday night throught Sunday.
This collection is packed with intellegent lyrics,
foot tapping beats, and melodic expressions. The
second CD "Taller"
released in 2001 is clearly an example of how the years between the
two
albums were creatively used. During this time
the founder & frontman of Skinny Paul Herman
took part in four tracks of Dido's successful
album "No
Angel". Favorites from the "Taller"
album include the soul-lifting 'Sweet Thing',
a moodier 'Worth It', and a more energetic '5 past 9'.
This is perfect wind down CD, or the soundtrack
for a night when you just want to stay at home.
Although Skinny has not had a new release in a
few years we thought it appropriate to revisit
this snapshot of the spirit of "off the beaten
path", non commercialized talent. Several years
ago, Skinny was being touted for chart success
off the back of an annoyingly catchy single
called, ironically, 'Failure'. You can’t help
thinking that there is great potential for these guys..
